D. Isabel: Ah! Boa noite, meu rei.

00:02:22,375 –> 00:02:28,250
{{D. Dinis I: So do you have insomnia or is the heat keeping you awake?}}
23
00:02:28,250 –> 00:02:31,125
{{D. Isabel: Well…it’s actually both.}}
24
00:02:31,125 –> 00:02:38,750
A cozinha!?
{{D. Dinis I: So you’ve decided to come to the hottest spot in the caste? The kitchen!?}}
25
00:02:38,750 –> 00:02:43,667
D. Isabel: Sabes o que é? Estava com muita sede. Vim beber água.
{{D. Isabel: You know what it is? I was very thirsty. I came to drink some water.}}
26
00:02:43,667 –> 00:02:49,834
D. Dinis I: As tuas criadas não te deixam água no teu quarto? Vou tratar desse assunto.
{{D. Dinis I: Your maids didn’t leave any water in your bedroom? I’ll deal with this matter.}}
27
00:02:49,834 –> 00:02:58,333

29
00:03:07,125 –> 00:03:12,208
gosto de dar trabalho. Não ia chamar as criadas para isso.
{{I don’t like to be a bother. I wouldn’t call the maids just for that.}}
30
00:03:12,208 –> 00:03:15,667
D. Dinis I: Está bem, está bem. E para vires à cozinha
{{D. Dinis I: Alright, alright. And to come to the kitchen}}
31
00:03:15,667 –> 00:03:22,125
{{in the middle of the night, you had to wear a gown as if you were going out!?}}
32
00:03:22,125 –> 00:03:30,041
D. Isabel: Ó Dinis… eu sou a rainha!

{{a nightgown!?}}
34
00:03:32,166 –> 00:03:38,917
D. Dinis I: Isabel, tu andas a esconder-me alguma coisa!
{{D. Dinis I: Isabel, you’re hiding something from me! You know I’ve been told you were seen during}}

00:03:38,917 –> 00:03:44,375
{{the night, in the village, leaving the poor people’s shelter?}}
36
00:03:44,375 –> 00:03:53,333
D. Isabel: A mim!? Ó Dinis… isso não faz qualquer sentido. Tu sabes como eu sou medrosa. Como é que
{{D. Isabel: Me!? Oh Dinis… that doesn’t make any sense. You know how scared I am. How would}}
37
00:03:53,333 –> 00:03:57,375
{{I wander at night by myself through the village?}}

00:03:57,375 –> 00:04:05,834
D. Dinis I: Não sei. Diz-me tu.
{{D. Dinis I: I don’t know. You tell me. Haven’t I found you here so far from your bedroom?}}
39
00:04:05,834 –> 00:04:11,917
{{And at night, this castle is scary even to me.}}
40
00:04:11,917 –> 00:04:19,875
E já agora… O que levas aí no vestido? Um lanche para mais tarde?
{{And now – What is it you carry in your dress? A snack for later?}}
41
00:04:19,917 –> 00:04:28,291
{{By its size, I’d say it’s a snack for you and all the other maids.}}
42
00:04:28,291 –> 00:04:36,208
D. Isabel: Isto!?
{{D. Isabel: This!? Do you know what happened, Dinis? While drinking water I got the hem of my dress wet, therefore,}}
43
00:04:36,208 –> 00:04:40,083
{{had to fold it so I wouldn’t get my shoes wet as well.}}
44
00:04:40,083 –> 00:04:45,667
D. Dinis I: Chega, Isabel! Julgas que me enganas com essas mentiras?
{{D. Dinis I: Enough, Isabel! Do you believe you can fool me with these lies?}}
45
00:04:45,667 –> 00:04:53,291
Narrador: Ao ver o rei tão zangado, Isabel tremeu de medo. Ela conhecia o seu marido. Sabia que
{{Narrator: When she saw the king so angry, Isabel trembled with fear. She knew her husband. She knew that}}
46
00:04:53,291 –> 00:05:00,375
{{even though he was a fair man, he didn’t tolerate lies or treason.}}
47
00:05:00,375 –> 00:05:08,792
D. Isabel: Ó Dinis, meu rei… acalma-te! Tu conheces-me. Sabes que eu não minto. Se te digo que tenho
{{D. Isabel: Oh Dinis, my king… please calm down. You know me. You know I don’t lie. If I tell you I got}}
48
00:05:08,792 –> 00:05:12,834
o vestido molhado é porque é verdade.
{{my dress wet it’s because it is true.}}
49
00:05:12,834 –> 00:05:17,291
Narrador: Furioso e desconfiado do comportamento da rainha, o rei
{{Narrator: Furious and suspicious of the queen’s behaviour, the king}}
50
00:05:17,291 –> 00:05:21,583
aproximou-se e, olhando-a nos olhos, disse-lhe:
{{got closer and, looking into her eyes, said to her:}}
51
00:05:21,583 –> 00:05:31,750
D. Dinis I: Ouve-me bem, Isabel!
{{D. Dinis I: Listen to me well, Isabel! Either you tell me the truth or you are forbidden of doing your charity}}

caridade. Se for preciso, tranco-te para sempre no teu quarto. Diz-me imediatamente o que
{{work. If I have to, I’ll lock you forever in your room. Tell me immediately what}}
53
00:05:42,000 –> 00:05:43,667
levas no vestido!
{{you carry in your dress!}}
54
00:05:43,667 –> 00:05:49,542

{{poor, they would have no one to look out for them. So many depended on her!}}
56
00:05:57,750 –> 00:06:05,208
{{Panicked and already anticipating her punishment, Isabel ended up replying:}}
57
00:06:05,208 –> 00:06:12,750
D. Isabel: Pronto, está bem. Vou contar-te a verdade.
{{D. Isabel: There, alright. I’ll tell you the truth. I was drinking water when I looked through the kitchen}}
58
00:06:12,750 –> 00:06:22,291
da cozinha e vi no jardim umas rosas lindas, cheias do orvalho da noite. Não resisti e
{{window and saw some beautiful roses, covered in dew. I couldn’t resist and}}
59
00:06:22,291 –> 00:06:28,959
{{went out to pick up some. That’s why, what I carry in my dress are roses, Sir.}}
60
00:06:28,959 –> 00:06:35,333
D. Dinis I: Então abre a dobra do vestido e mostra-me essas rosas,
{{D. Dinis I: So open the dress folds and show me these roses,}}
61
00:06:35,333 –> 00:06:41,417
porque desta janela não vejo flores algumas no jardim.
{{because from this window I see no flowers in the garden.}}
62
00:06:41,417 –> 00:06:48,500
{{Narrator: When she opened the dress, several white roses fell from it. The most beautiful ones the king}}
63
00:06:48,500 –> 00:06:57,959
{{had ever seen, and the most scented too. The whole castle was filled with an incredible fragrance.}}
64
00:06:57,959 –> 00:07:04,208
Ele tinha a certeza
{{Dinis realised he had just witnessed a miracle. He was certain that}}
65
00:07:04,208 –> 00:07:10,792
{{whatever his wife had in her dress had turned into roses. And if it happened}}
66
00:07:10,792 –> 00:07:17,959
{{that way, was because whatever his wife did was important enough to warrant divine}}

I have just listened to this earlier podcast,and I was very surprised to hear the story, because we have basically exactly the same legend (myth) with a Hungarian saint, Saint Elisabeth of Hungary (roses and everything). And I just found this site explaining that the miracle of roses was a common thing in the medievals, and also that our Elizabeth was a great-aunt of your Portuguese Isabel! 😉 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_of_the_roses
