  • Please help me understand the construction of this sentence. “O que posso fazer eu para ajudar?”,
It is the repeat of “Eu” (being implied in “posso”) which I do not understand.
Does “ O que Eu posso fazer para ajudar” work too?

    • It does feel repetitive/redundant, but in fact, the subject is only added once, albeit inverted with the main verbs. It’s simply a stylistic variation; it makes it all sound extra polite and refined 🙂 All other variations are fine too:
      – O que (é que) posso fazer para ajudar?
      – O que (é que) eu posso fazer para ajudar?
      – O que (é que) posso eu fazer para ajudar?

    • In this case he doesn’t exactly apologize. He just justifies his sneezing with the fact that he suffers from rhinitis.
It could also be “he justifies immediately” or “he justifies right away”.
Anyway, there are always several ways of translating the same idea. 🙂
