Hi, can you shed some light on this phrase? I know idiomatic expressions sometimes just have to be learnt, but is there anything we should know about this one? Where does “gente” come into it?
R: Eu acho que a gente já se conhece!
R: I think we already know each other!
This is a great vid, we really enjoyed it and it is useful also for technical words for our vindimas. I have another request, Rui has a great singing voice, please can you tell me the name of the folk song he sings – I am sick of hearing my husband singing the Portuguese national anthem whilst he shaves and I need something else instead!
Many thanks
Olá! “A gente” is an extra-casual alternative to “nós” (we). Fully interchangeable with it – just be aware that as a singular noun, “gente” must be paired with verbs conjugated in the singular (unlike “nós”, which requires verbs to be in the plural).
Rui is singing some made-up stuff, but also two actual songs: “Ó rama, ó que linda rama” and “A minha casinha”, the latter by a rock band called Xutos & Pontapés 🙂
Hi Joseph, that’s really interesting – I haven’t come across that use of “Gente” before, you don’t happen to know if there are other examples of its use in Practice Portuguese recordings? (sorry I don’t expect you to have encylopedic knowledge of every grammatical reference!) but as you say it means the verb connected with it is conjugated in the singular, so the phrase could also be Eu acho que a gente já te conhece! Is that correct?
Olá. Indeed, it pops up here and there in podcasts and videos. Just a couple of examples I found quickly:
– Video “Passo a Passo 2 – A Rota Vicentina”, around 33:10, Joel says “A gente tem que trabalhar”
– Video “Rui & Joel Make Vinho!”, right around 1:56, Rui says “Eu acho que a gente já se conhece” (and there are other examples along the video)
Your example is perfectly correct and very similar to the second one I listed above. Between them, there’s just a small difference:
– Eu acho que a gente já te conhece = I think we already know you (unilateral)
– Eu acho que a gente já se conhece = I think we already know each other (bilateral)
Thank you again, we are really benefiting from PP material, together we listen daily to shorties particularly and it is making a big difference to our aural comprehension, and its so satifying when you come across something like this use of gente in another source and the meaning falls into place. I found this on euro news about a contentious barragem and in the interview the lady uses gente about 3 times (in case anyone else is interested) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDZ5R1Ko5rM
Boa continuação de bom trabalho
