1
00:00:03,221 –> 00:00:05,182
Está escuro como a meia-noite.
{{It’s dark like midnight.}}
2
00:00:05,182 –> 00:00:10,776
{{We’re a mere speck tossing about in twenty-foot seas on the vast North Atlantic Ocean.}}
3
00:00:10,776 –> 00:00:16,613
{{Two hundred nautical miles north is Newfoundland, the closest point of civilization.}}
4
00:00:16,613 –> 00:00:18,848
Os ventos gritam através do cordame.
{{Winds are screaming through the rigging.}}
5
00:00:18,848 –> 00:00:21,290
Ouve-se um embate feroz contra o casco.
{{There’s a fierce clanging against the hull.}}
6
00:00:21,290 –> 00:00:24,372
{{David pokes his head up from the companionway to investigate}}
7
00:00:24,372 –> 00:00:29,691
{{as streaks of salt foam fly horizontally across the deck -}}
8
00:00:29,691 –> 00:00:31,760
encharcando-o, mais uma vez.
{{drenching him, yet again.}}
9
00:00:31,760 –> 00:00:37,995
{{I stay huddled below decks on the makeshift bed of cushions arranged on the cabin sole,}}
10
00:00:37,995 –> 00:00:41,106
{{blankets tucked under my chin.}}
11
00:00:41,106 –> 00:00:43,661
{{My body braces for the next breaking wave,}}
12
00:00:43,661 –> 00:00:49,736
que eu sei em breve baterá contra as paredes de fibra de vidro do nosso pequeno veleiro, Inia.
{{which I know will soon pound against the fibreglass walls of our small sailboat, Inia.}}
13
00:00:49,736 –> 00:00:51,443
Sinto o cheiro do sal.
{{I smell the brininess.}}
14
00:00:51,443 –> 00:00:56,125
{{I scan the edges of the floorboards for signs of water seeping in}}
15
00:00:56,125 –> 00:01:01,157
{{as the bilge-pump light turns on, then off, then on again.}}
16
00:01:01,157 –> 00:01:02,902
Vomito no balde ao meu lado.
{{I vomit in the bucket beside me.}}
17
00:01:02,902 –> 00:01:06,897
{{Three days after leaving the shores of the Gaspé Peninsula,}}
18
00:01:06,897 –> 00:01:13,624
{{Inia is hove to and we are riding out a full-blown gale, just my husband and me.}}
19
00:01:13,624 –> 00:01:17,644
Longe disso.
{{This was David’s dream, not mine. Far from it.}}
20
00:01:17,644 –> 00:01:24,525
{{I loved family and friends, our dog, our home, my job as an occupational therapist.}}
21
00:01:24,525 –> 00:01:27,035
Appliqué era a minha ideia de emoção.
{{Appliqué was my idea of a thrill.}}
22
00:01:27,035 –> 00:01:30,533
Nenhuma parte do meu corpo procurava aventura.
{{I didn’t have an adventure-seeking bone in my body.}}
23
00:01:30,533 –> 00:01:33,813
A véspera de Natal de 2005 mudou tudo.
{{Christmas Eve 2005 changed everything.}}
24
00:01:33,813 –> 00:01:36,267
Enquanto fazia compras de última hora,
{{While doing last-minute shopping,}}
25
00:01:36,267 –> 00:01:40,427
{{David had a grand mal seizure of such violence}}
26
00:01:40,427 –> 00:01:43,745
{{his spine fractured in two places}}
27
00:01:43,745 –> 00:01:48,053
{{and cuts on his head took fourteen stitches to close.}}
28
00:01:48,053 –> 00:01:52,465
{{The doctor said stress and sleep deprivation were likely the cause.}}
29
00:01:52,465 –> 00:01:53,976
E isso fazia sentido.
{{And it made sense.}}
30
00:01:53,976 –> 00:01:59,065
{{Over the preceding years, he had worried non-stop about our three sons.}}
31
00:01:59,065 –> 00:02:00,131
E eu também.
{{So had I.}}
32
00:02:00,131 –> 00:02:02,294
Enquanto caminhavam para a idade adulta,
{{As they headed toward adulthood,}}
33
00:02:02,294 –> 00:02:07,274
{{we questioned their lifestyles, fretted about their plans,}}
34
00:02:07,274 –> 00:02:11,516
{{wondered if they would ever be able to make their own way,}}
35
00:02:11,516 –> 00:02:15,035
{{feared they might never find their spots in this world -}}
36
00:02:15,035 –> 00:02:18,554
tudo isto enquanto o David estava sobrecarregado no trabalho.
{{all this while David was being buried alive at work.}}
37
00:02:18,554 –> 00:02:21,700
Em retrospetiva, algo tinha que ceder.
{{In retrospect, something had to give.}}
38
00:02:21,700 –> 00:02:26,793
{{It could have been worse; he could have been disabled by a stroke}}
39
00:02:26,793 –> 00:02:29,584
ou até ter morrido de ataque cardíaco.
{{or even died from a heart attack.}}
40
00:02:29,584 –> 00:02:31,286
Ele recuperou totalmente.
{{He made a full recovery.}}
41
00:02:31,286 –> 00:02:34,561
{{The seizure was a warning for which we were grateful.}}
42
00:02:34,561 –> 00:02:39,035
{{When David returned to the office, the scars still raw,}}
43
00:02:39,035 –> 00:02:43,887
{{he attended a pre-arranged meeting that he thought was to finally}}
44
00:02:43,887 –> 00:02:46,562
abordar a sua carga de trabalho impossível.
{{address his impossible workload.}}
45
00:02:46,562 –> 00:02:48,858
Em vez disso, foi despedido.
{{Instead, he was fired.}}
46
00:02:48,858 –> 00:02:52,352
“Reestruturação”, foi o que o CEO lhe chamou.
{{“Restructuring,” the CEO called it.}}
47
00:02:52,352 –> 00:02:58,276
{{I was immobilized by the news at first, the feelings of betrayal, the hurt.}}
48
00:02:58,276 –> 00:03:02,787
{{In time, though, I realized this too was a blessing in disguise.}}
49
00:03:02,787 –> 00:03:06,859
“Se queres atravessar um oceano, esta é a tua oportunidade”, disse eu.
{{“If you want to cross an ocean, this is your opportunity,” I said.}}
50
00:03:06,859 –> 00:03:09,274
As sobrancelhas de David levantaram-se.
{{David’s eyebrows spiked.}}
51
00:03:09,274 –> 00:03:15,431
“E liberdade é o que os rapazes precisam agora, tempo e espaço para descobrirem as coisas por si próprios.
{{“And freedom’s what the boys need now, time and space to figure things out for themselves.}}
52
00:03:15,431 –> 00:03:20,265
{{So I’ll go too,” I said, surprising even myself.}}
53
00:03:20,265 –> 00:03:25,875
{{May 21, 2007, David and I, both in our fifties,}}
54
00:03:25,875 –> 00:03:30,104
{{with no real blue-water or night-sailing experience,}}
55
00:03:30,104 –> 00:03:36,534
{{cast off the dock lines in Hamilton Harbour, the westernmost point of Lake Ontario,}}
56
00:03:36,534 –> 00:03:38,494
e dirigimo-nos para leste.
{{and headed east.}}
57
00:03:38,494 –> 00:03:40,972
Destino: o Oceano Atlântico.
{{Destination: the Atlantic Ocean.}}
58
00:03:40,972 –> 00:03:42,554
Isso foi há seis semanas.
{{That was six weeks ago.}}
59
00:03:42,554 –> 00:03:48,554
{{Now, with barely a thousand miles under our belts and potentially another ten thousand to go,}}
60
00:03:48,554 –> 00:03:52,576
{{David is worried about storm damage,}}
61
00:03:52,576 –> 00:03:56,444
e eu estou com frio, enjoada e com medo.
{{and I’m cold and sick and afraid.}}
62
00:03:56,444 –> 00:03:57,954
Rezo por um indulto.
{{I pray for reprieve.}}
63
00:03:57,954 –> 00:04:00,014
Anseio por terra firme.
{{I long for solid ground.}}
64
00:04:00,014 –> 00:04:04,872
{{And I can’t help but ask myself, “What the hell was I thinking?”}}
Wow! This is great, such an engaging story.
This one’s a toughie but a goodie! Thanks for your hard work on this, all.
Ó mar salgado, quanto do teu sal
São lágrimas de Portugal!
…..
Obrigado. Eu não conhecia este bonito poema. Sinto a emoção.
Here’s one: A Vida do Poeta Fernando Pessoa
Thank you, a goodie and a flavour of ‘real’ portuguese about something that wasn’t just there to develop your comprehension, it had that indefinable quality of soul.
Mesmo impressionante. Fique arrepiada!
Obrigada.
Aqui é um podcast:

How beautiful! More literature it’s fantastic!!
And Eliana’s reading is amazing.
Is there a Portuguese version of this book, with European portuguese audios?
Unfortunately, no. At least not yet! We’ve requested permission from Sue and her publisher to adapt this excerpt into European Portuguese to share with our members. That’s all there is in Portuguese from Sue William’s book for now. 🙂
I’m confused about the dependent clause “apanhando-me até a mim de surpresa” at 03:15.
The original clause “surprising even myself” consisted of only three words. Why did it become so lengthy in the portuguese translation?
There must be some grammar structure in this clause that I’m not aware of? Could you explain it in details?
The Portuguese wording would more directly translate to English as “catching [apanhando] even [até] me [a mim] by [de] surprise [surpresa]” 🙂
