    • Yes! The sentence could work without the word “era”: “Deviam agradecer” (Should/Would be better to thank). However, adding “era” it gives the sentence an extra element of emphasis. The verb “ser” is often used as a source of extra emphasis, in different verb tenses:
      – Eu quero *é* ir ao teatro! = What I want is to go to the theatre! (“Eu quero ir ao teatro” would be enough)
      – Tu não sabias *era* que ele também vinha = What you didn’t know was that he would come too
