  • Nuno: Olá, Lena. Ouvi dizer que adormeceste no IKEA? Nuno: Hello, Lena. I heard that you fell asleep at IKEA?
  • Helena: Quem é que te contou? Helena: Who told you?
  • Nuno: A minha namorada trabalha lá e foi ela que me contou. O que estavas a fazer no IKEA? Nuno: My girlfriend works there and she told me. What were you doing at IKEA?
  • Helena: Estava a comprar um sofá. Aquilo é tão grande que me perdi antes de sequer encontrar a parte dos sofás… Helena: I was buying a sofa. It's so big there that I got lost before I even found the sofa section...
  • Nuno: Há quem diga que é preciso um mapa para andar dentro do IKEA. Nuno: Some say you need a map to get around inside IKEA.
  • Helena: Em todo o caso, tenho de resolver isto, que isto já começa a ser chato… Estou sempre a adormecer em todo o lado. Helena: In any case, I have to sort this out, it's getting annoying... I keep falling asleep everywhere.

  • In the sentence, “As medidas foram alargadas a todas as regiões, entre as quais a de Lisboa” I am struggling to understand how “entre as quais a de” means “including”. Please would you explain the structure of this phrase – there doesn’t seem to be anything equivalent in English. Is it just an idiom to be learned?

    • This phrase can be broken down as follows: “entre” means “among”, “as quais” translates to “which,” and “a de” in this context refers to “the one of”. So, the phrase “entre as quais a de Lisboa” literally translates to “among which the one of Lisbon,” which is a more formal way of saying “including Lisbon” in English.
In Portuguese, this structure is a common way to specify one or more items in a list, and it’s used to give emphasis to the items being mentioned. It’s not exactly an idiom, but rather a grammatical construction that is used in formal or written Portuguese. It might seem a bit complex because there isn’t a direct one-to-one translation in English, but understanding the components of the phrase can help make sense of it.
I hope this explanation clarifies the structure for you. 🙂

  • In the text ,Aliás, isso lembra-me aquela vez…’ could you please check this, could be a typo and should have been ‘isso lembra-me daquela vez’
    Thank you very much

    • Thanks! “Lembra aquela” (or “lembra-me aquela”, as seen here) is actually an idiomatic option that is used when the subject is not the one remembering something themselves, but reminds someone else of something familiar. This is why earlier in the dialogue, we have “Lembro-me daquela vez…” (I remember that time…), with preposition, but here we have “Isso lembra-me aquela vez…” (That reminds me of that time…).
