Comments

  • I know that some letters are swallowed but condutor sounds like contor in the script but when I highlight the word and check I can hear all the letters. Very confusing.

    • I understand! It can definitely be more challenging to understand words in connected speech. It is indeed “condutor”, but that “u” vowel is quite reduced here. The sounds “d” and “t” are produced very similarly / in the same part of the mouth, so the “u” gets a bit lost in the transition.

This is a normal (but frustrating!) part of learning a language. In everyday speech, most people do not enunciate every sound. In European Portuguese unstressed syllables and closed vowels are especially prone to this effect. (And in this case, the similarity of “t” and “d” makes it extra tricky.)

Great idea to search it in the translator tool so you can hear a slower version. That’s a good approach!
