  • First time I’ve heard ‘Rato Mickey’ and ‘Pato Donald’ – it made me chuckle for some reason!
Also, Fernanda’s voice sounds very typical of the people I encounter day to day in Portugal, so it’s nice to hear.

  • Hi
Please could you tell me why it’s “até a Albufeira “ ? Why is the até there?

Also, why is it “para Portimão “ when it’s just a holiday, not going to live there, or spend a lot of time there?

    Many thanks
    Debbie

    • Olá, Debbie! Looks like there was a typo – it should just be “até Albufeira”. However, for places that are usually preceded by definite articles, you will often see “até à” or “até ao” (até ao Porto, até à Nazaré…). This is indeed redundant, but it’s a very common, idiomatic way of phrasing it. It emphasizes the movement from one location to another.

As for “ir para” vs. “ir a”, each person’s interpretation of what defines a long-term movement (typically described as “ir para”) is quite variable and flexible. You might hear people using “vou para” to refer to holidays, because even though they’re short term, they usually last for at least a few days. The line between “vou a” and “vou oara” is not rigid 🙂

  • I’m a bit confused by the phrase “….tendo a Raquel ficado instalada num quarto…..”. Why not “A Raquel ficou num quarto”? Or perhaps translated as “Raquel having been installed in (allocated?) a room…”?

    • You can absolutely just say “A Raquel ficou num quarto” 🙂 The current wording is simply a more florid, literary alternative.
