1
00:00:03,186 –> 00:00:06,856
{{Andreia: João, I have an extremely important question to ask you.}}
2
00:00:07,286 –> 00:00:07,966
João: Chuta.
{{João: Shoot.}}
3
00:00:08,370 –> 00:00:11,096
{{Andreia: If you were an animal, what animal would you like to be?}}
4
00:00:11,606 –> 00:00:13,916
João: Um lagostim, obviamente.
{{João: A crayfish, obviously.}}
5
00:00:14,430 –> 00:00:18,466
{{Andreia: If you were a crayfish you would spend your life underwater! How boring.}}
6
00:00:18,846 –> 00:00:19,786
Porquê um lagostim?
{{Why a crayfish?}}
7
00:00:20,346 –> 00:00:26,636
{{João: Because they don’t age. If I were a crawfish, I would live forever.}}
8
00:00:27,140 –> 00:00:31,036
{{Andreia: If that were true, there would be crayfish thousands of years old…}}
9
00:00:31,496 –> 00:00:33,696
João: Se calhar há. Sabes lá.
{{João: Maybe there are. You don’t know.}}
10
00:00:34,626 –> 00:00:36,966
Agora tenho eu uma pergunta para ti.
{{Now I have a question for you.}}
11
00:00:37,776 –> 00:00:46,906
{{If you had to choose between never seeing a movie again or never eating out again, which would you choose?}}
12
00:00:47,500 –> 00:00:51,826
Andreia: A segunda.
{{Andreia: The second one. If I can’t go out to eat, at least I can cook at home.}}
13
00:00:52,296 –> 00:00:54,986
João: E se os restaurantes fossem grátis?
{{João: What if the restaurants were free?}}
14
00:00:55,370 –> 00:01:00,700
{{Andreia: Now you’re just making trouble! If they were free I would eat out every day.}}
15
00:01:01,216 –> 00:01:03,096
João: Olha, não estás com calor?
{{João: Look, aren’t you hot?}}
16
00:01:03,936 –> 00:01:08,836
Estou a gostar.
{{If we went to a terrace we could continue this conversation. I’m enjoying it.}}
17
00:01:09,250 –> 00:01:11,676
Andreia: Pois. Se estivéssemos na praia estávamos melhor.
{{Andreia: Right. If we were on the beach we’d be better off.}}
18
00:01:12,126 –> 00:01:17,736
{{João: If global warming had been taken seriously, I wouldn’t be so hot right now.}}
19
00:01:18,260 –> 00:01:21,806
{{Andreia: That would only happen if our politicians were decent people.}}
20
00:01:22,266 –> 00:01:27,966
{{João: Right. If we wait for the politicians to act, we’re in big trouble…}}
21
00:01:28,520 –> 00:01:32,280
Andreia: Sim. Se as pessoas forem votar sempre nos mesmos, nada muda.
{{Andreia: Yes. If people go to vote for the same ones all the time, nothing changes.}}
22
00:01:32,786 –> 00:01:36,536
João: Bem, tenho outra pergunta extremamente importante.
{{João: Well, I have another extremely important question.}}
23
00:01:37,066 –> 00:01:41,436
{{If your father were king, what country would you like him to be from?}}
24
00:01:42,000 –> 00:01:46,260
{{Andreia: If my father were king, I’d be a princess! How cool!}}
25
00:01:47,020 –> 00:01:50,440
Hmm…
{{Hmm… If he were king, I would want him to be king of England.}}
26
00:01:51,100 –> 00:01:53,680
{{If only to give Queen Elizabeth some rest.}}
Hi! Can you tell me why we use Imperfeito do Conjuntivo in “Se fosses um animal…” but use Futuro do Conjuntivo in “Se fores um lagostim…”? Thanks! And I’m afraid that the spelling of “fossemos” is wrong… Might it be “fôssemos”?
Olá 🙂 The switch of tenses is not mandatory, but it’s something we might do in conversation. In both sentences, it’s very clear that what they’re talking about is hypothetical, but the future subjunctive arguably makes that hypothesis feel more concrete/possible. You can see that they switch to the future subjunctive at times where they’re actively analysing the imaginary scenarios (e.g. thinking about how his life as a crayfish, or without being able to eat out, would be) or talking about real future possibilities (e.g. politicians that don’t do anything and people that always vote the same).
Also, thanks for catching the missing accent – fixed.

Does Elizabeth translate to Isabel?
Yes, it does!
This one has a daft literary quality, quite refreshing in the language learning context!
