Reservar Um Hotel

Booking a Hotel

Nuno is going to Lisbon for a few days to take care of some business and decides to reserve a hotel room in advance!

  • Nuno: Estou? Nuno: Hello? (on the phone)
  • Empregada: Boa tarde! Daqui fala do hotel Moçambique. Como é que eu poderei ajudar? Employee: Good afternoon! This is the Mozambique hotel. How can I help?
  • Nuno: Boa tarde. Eu pretendia fazer uma reserva no vosso hotel. Nuno: Good afternoon. I wanted to make a reservation at your hotel.
  • Empregada: Com certeza. Para quando é que seria a reserva? Employee: Certainly. When would the reservation be for?
  • Nuno: Eu estou à procura de um alojamento para quarta-feira. Nuno: I am looking for an accommodation for Wednesday.
  • Empregada: A estadia é apenas durante uma noite? Employee: Is the stay just for one night?
  • Nuno: Como tenho de tratar uns assuntos em Lisboa, acho que será melhor reservar duas noites. Nuno: As I have to deal with some matters in Lisbon, I think it will be better to book two nights.

  • Eu também queria saber se o pequeno-almoço estará incluído? – I am trying to get a handle on the subjunctive, why is estará not in the future subjunctive (estiver) after se,
as there is some doubt as to whether breakfast be included or not?!

    • You don’t necessarily have to use the future subjunctive after the word “se” – it all depends on how people want to phrase things. I’m honestly struggling to find any explanation that makes sense to you as an English speaker, haha. Let’s say that in cases where you can translate “se” as “whether”, you most likely won’t need the subjunctive. That’s the case here: Eu também queria saber se o pequeno-almoço estará incluído? = I would also like to know whether breakfast will be included?
