Comments

  • Why does Rita say, “Ando a ver se perco algum peso até ao verão,”? I was expecting subjunctive “perca” after “se”. Is it just idiomatic?

    • Olá! The subjunctive is not suitable in this sentence, and the present subjunctive in particular (e.g. ‘perca’) is generally incompatible with the word ‘se’. ‘Se’ goes with the imperfect and future subjunctive instead. Here’s an example of a sentence where the present subjunctive could be used:
      – O meu treinador criou um plano para que eu perca peso até ao verão

And here are examples of sentences in the imperfect and future subjunctive where ‘se’ could be used:
      – Se eu pudesse, faria mais viagens.
      – Junta-te a nós amanhã se puderes!
