  • I was a bit surprised by ” Estou apaixonado por ela há quinze anos”. Would “sou apaixonado” work here? Or does the reference to “quinze anos” mean that it has to be “estou”?

    • ‘Estar apaixonado’ is common when discussing a new/recent passion (whether it concerns people, objects, activities, etc). ‘Ser apaixonado’ becomes a suitable alternative once you’re discussing a passion or love that feels intrinsic or immutable to you, e.g. “Sou apaixonado por música” (I’m passionate about/I love music). In this context, after 15 years, the speaker might have reached a point where ‘sou apaixonado’ would feel just as natural to say, but it’s fine to keep it as ‘estou apaixonado’, especially since he’s describing an unrequited love which could eventually fade.

  • Shouldn’t the English translation of the text of “o padre bateu-lhe contra a traseira do BWM ao estacionar” be “the father him him against the back of the BMW as he parked” not that he hit the back of the the BWM?

    • Olá! The current translation is more suitable. The sentence is saying that the priest hit the back of the bride’s father’s BMW while trying to park, and the clitic pronoun in ‘bateu-lhe’ is being used idiomatically, not to suggest that the priest hit the bride’s father directly, but to express that it was the father’s car. We could also phrase it as “O padre bateu contra a traseira do BMW *dele* ao estacionar”.
