1
00:00:03,282 –> 00:00:09,662
{{Teacher: Children, I already have your test results and I have to say that they are not good at all.}}
2
00:00:09,972 –> 00:00:15,483
De 0 a 20, a nota mais alta é um 12. Um autêntico desastre!
{{From 0 to 20, the highest score is a 12. A real disaster!}}
3
00:00:16,112 –> 00:00:21,242
{{So, I’m going to give you the opportunity to repeat the test, with consultation. (i.e. with the book available)}}
4
00:00:21,972 –> 00:00:29,616
{{Of course, for the final evaluation, this test cannot be worth the usual 50%, but 25%.}}
5
00:00:30,392 –> 00:00:36,958
{{At home, you will do an essay on a subject of your choice, which is worth the other 25%.}}
6
00:00:37,302 –> 00:00:38,969
É para entregar na próxima aula.
{{It is to be turned in in the next class.}}
7
00:00:39,742 –> 00:00:45,502
{{Now, I just want to see the test sheet, the manual (the book on that subject), and the pen on your desks.}}
8
00:00:45,892 –> 00:00:50,462
{{So, keep the rest of the materials, like [pencil] cases and notebooks, in your backpack.}}
9
00:00:50,842 –> 00:00:55,351
{{Needless to say, cell phones are also to be put away, right, Ava?}}
10
00:00:55,782 –> 00:00:56,779
Ava: Desculpe, professora.
{{Ava: I’m sorry, teacher.}}
11
00:00:57,282 –> 00:00:59,742
Professora: Têm 60 minutos para terminar o teste.
{{Teacher: You have 60 minutes to finish the test.}}
12
00:01:00,132 –> 00:01:02,972
{{As usual, I don’t want to hear anyone talking.}}
13
00:01:03,472 –> 00:01:08,181
{{If you need to clarify any questions, raise your hand and I will come to you.}}
14
00:01:08,572 –> 00:01:10,415
Estamos entendidos, não estamos?
{{We understand each other, don’t we?}}
15
00:01:10,922 –> 00:01:14,947
{{Ava: Teacher, will the test at the end of the period (term) also be with consultation?}}
16
00:01:15,472 –> 00:01:19,554
Professora: Não, claro que não. E continua a valer 50%.
{{Teacher: No, of course not. And it’s still worth 50%.}}
17
00:01:19,872 –> 00:01:22,368
{{So you’d better start studying!}}
18
00:01:22,802 –> 00:01:25,710
Mais alguma dúvida? Então podem começar.
{{Any more questions? Then you can start.}}
In the sentence “…..vou dar-vos a oportunidade de repetirem o teste…..”, why is repetirem conjugated in 3rd Pl? I would have expected the infinitive form? Thanks for a wonderful course.
Good question. It is actually the infinitive – the personal infinitive!
In this particular sentence, both the personal and the impersonal infinitive (repetirem / repetir) can be used with no difference in meaning. The personal infinitive is just reinforcing the grammatical person that has already been established earlier in the sentence (by’-vos’).
so “repetirem” is not the (plural) future subjuntive ? …. i.e., because retaking the test is still a hypothetical opportunity ?
In this case, “repetirem” is conjugated in the personal infinitive. It is the same form for the 3rd person plural for future subjuntive, but it would have to be something like: “Eu farei isso, quando vocês repetirem o teste” (I’ll do that, when you repeat the test).
The teacher is giving them an opportunity for them to repeat the test, which makes it the personal infinitive.
