Numbers

In this unit, we’ll learn about Portuguese números numbers or numerais numerals.
Números are just one type of quantificadores quantifiers, but they are so important that we thought they deserved their own unit. (All the other types of quantifiers will be explained in a later unit.) Números tell us the specific, numeric amount of a particular something.

The 5 Types of Numbers:

  • cardinais cardinal – Cardinal numbers: 1, 2, 3…
  • ordinais ordinal – Ordinal numbers: First, second, third…
  • multiplicativos multiplier – Multiplier numbers: Double, triple, quadruple…
  • fracionários fractional – Fractional numbers: Half (1/2), third (1/3), fourth (1/4)…
  • coletivos collective – Collective numbers: Duo, trio, dozen…

We’ll focus on the cardinal numbers in this first Numbers unit and then cover the other types in the Numbers 2 unit. Below you’ll find a handy reference chart with all 5 types.
