  • The learning note for roupa e acessário taught the verb calçar for shoes and gloves, but here the dad tells Tiago to “põe os sapatos”. Are the verbs pôr and calçar interchangeable for putting shoes on, or is the use of pôr significant?

    • They’re interchangeable, with no difference in meaning in this context. In fact, the verb ‘pôr’ can be used broadly for any piece of clothing, interchangeably with both ‘calçar’ and ‘vestir’.

    • ‘Usá-lo’, with accent, derives from the infinitive form ‘usar’. The accent ensures that the open pronunciation of the vowel A is maintained even after the consonant R is dropped as the verb is merged with the object pronoun. ‘Usa-lo’, without accent, is a different word that derives from the 2nd-person singular conjugation ‘usas’ (tu usas –> tu usa-lo). So, it’s important to apply the accent correctly to avoid any confusion 🙂
