Adverbs of Time – Cedo, Tarde, Antes, Depois, Ontem, Hoje e Amanhã
In this lesson, we’ll look at some more adverbs of time (advérbios de tempo). The first group concerns things happening in relation to a specific point in time. And remember: adverbs of time are always invariable.
Cedo is equivalent to the English “early”. Examples: Tenho uma consulta de manhã cedo.I have an appointment early in the morning. Chegaste muito cedo.You’re very early.
Tarde is equivalent to the English “late”. Example: O professor chegou tarde.The professor arrived late.
Antes is equivalent to the English “before”. Example: Antes de entrares, tira os sapatos.Before you step in, remove of your shoes.
Depois is the equivalent to “after” in English. Example: Depois de ir às compras, vou para casa.After shopping for groceries, I’ll be going home. Finally, this second group of adverbs of time concerns the passage of days.
Ontem is the equivalent to “yesterday”. Example: Ela foi à praia ontem.She went to the beach yesterday.
Hoje is the equivalent to “today”. Example: Hoje foi um dia muito atarefado.Today was a pretty busy day.
Amanhã is the equivalent to “tomorrow”. Example: Amanhã vamos ao museu.We’re visiting the museum tomorrow.
