June 10th is Dia de PortugalPortugal Day . Its full name is Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades PortuguesasDay of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities , and it marks the death of Luís de Camões in 1580.
Camões is Portugal’s national poet, best known for his masterwork Os Lusíadas . The epic follows Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India, set against the wider story of os Descobrimentosthe Discoveries, Portugal's age of exploration .
He worked on the poem over nearly two decades abroad: military service in North Africa, where he lost his right eye, then years in Goa and Macau, naval battles, and a shipwreck in the Mekong Delta. Legend has it he swam to shore with one arm, holding the manuscript above the water with the other. 💪
Few countries name their national day after a poet. Portugal does, a sign of how central the language is to Portuguese identity.
You’ll find his name across the Portuguese-speaking world, on streets, public squares, schools, and cultural institutions. The holiday’s full title points outward too: the final part, das Comunidades Portuguesas, recognises the millions of Portuguese who have settled abroad, from France to the United States.
