{{M: Excuse me?}}
69
00:02:41,160 –> 00:02:42,160
DP: Pizza havaiana.
{{PPO: Hawaiian pizza.}}
70
00:02:42,160 –> 00:02:44,231
M: Desculpa, eu achei que vocês faziam somente pizzas portuguesas.
{{M: Sorry, I thought you were only going to make Portuguese pizza.}}
71

{{PPO: But our Hawaiian pizza is the same as a tropical pizza.}}
75
00:02:55,230 –> 00:02:56,319
M: Ah, entendi.
{{M: Ah, got that.}}
76
00:02:56,319 –> 00:02:59,069
DP: É aquela que tem ananás.
{{PPO: It’s that one with pineapple.}}

00:03:00,069 –> 00:03:01,069
M: Por acaso, não.
{{M: As a matter of fact, I don’t.}}

80
00:03:03,689 –> 00:03:05,400
DP: Penso que seja a mesma coisa.
{{PPO: I believe it’s the same thing.}}
81
00:03:05,400 –> 00:03:06,690
M: Ah, viu?
{{M: Ah, see?}}
82
00:03:06,690 –> 00:03:08,750
Nós estamos falando a mesma língua.
{{We’re speaking the same language.}}
83
00:03:08,750 –> 00:03:10,989
Ananás é igual a abacaxi.

Pelo menos concordamos numa coisa.
{{At least we agree on one thing.}}
89
00:03:23,420 –> 00:03:26,700
{{But tell me: So, after all, why do you want to work at a pizza place?}}
90
00:03:26,700 –> 00:03:27,700
M: Eu adoro pizza.
{{M: I love pizza.}}
91
00:03:27,700 –> 00:03:32,959

{{PPO: But it’s not good for you to come to work while enjoying pizza that much.}}
92
00:03:32,959 –> 00:03:35,420

00:03:37,420 –> 00:03:38,769
M: Mas vai jogar fora!
{{M: But you’ll throw it away!}}
96
00:03:38,769 –> 00:03:42,239
{{PPO: It’s supposed to be thrown away, not for you to take home.}}
97
00:03:42,239 –> 00:03:43,239
M: Ah, entendi.
{{M: Ah, got it.}}
98
00:03:43,239 –> 00:03:46,549
{{PPO: The few leftovers we have, we give to the poor.}}
99
00:03:46,549 –> 00:03:49,020

103
00:03:59,760 –> 00:04:00,760
DP: Vou repetir.
{{PPO: I’ll repeat.}}
104
00:04:00,760 –> 00:04:01,760
M: Obrigado.
{{M: Thank you.}}

110
00:04:19,690 –> 00:04:23,340

LOL love it.
Just love Julie’s website
and impressed she’s using your program.
Bit of a worry that even after all her years in Portugal
she’s still learning.
Dunno where that leaves me as a newbie:-)
Better get used to it, feeling like a newbie For us estrangeiros not born in the country, we’ll be learning for the rest of our lives… The best we can do is become less “newbie” with slow and steady progress. We can learn the 80% of most commonly-used vocabulary in a relatively short time as adults, but it’s the remaining 20% that will take the rest of our lives! (Not real stats, just applying Pareto’s principle 🙂
There’s always something to learn, Stan 🙂 One of the things I find really helpful about Practice Portuguese is the way they help you understand how Portuguese is actually used and spoken in real life, not just the way it’s presented in course books.
Delicioso !
Cumprimentos,
Chris
Hey Joel,
That was the most conversation about pizza …ever. Once again I took in about the same value “as a bucket of squid”
Great work man. Best,Mitch
This is very nice! I had never of this site before. I think I’ll start recommending it.
That would be great – we definitely need help to keep spreading the word! Obrigado and glad you like what you see so far 🙂
The part “tem é um problema” is this correct? Or is this something in between “tem um problema” and “é um problema”? Written oral language?
Thank you for your clarification!
Sorry for the confusion! Actually it is not entirely correct! It’s kind of slangish… It was meant to be “Há um problema” or even “Há é um problema”, being “é” just a word to pinpoint the idea. Sometimes when we talk to Brazilian people we tend to pick some of their words or accent, here and there, and that may have happened to me – yes, I played the pizza guy! In Brazil they say “Tem um problema” instead of European Portuguese “Há um problema”.
We’ve recorded this shorty in the early days of Practice Portuguese… if that means anything. 🙂
That means there is this variation existing between PT-PT saying “há um problema” and PT-BR saying, “tem um problema”? You would not say “tem um problema” at all in PT-PT?
This dialog is really cool, as it shows so many linguistic variations between PT-PT and PT-BR, and also small thinks like “I shall pray for you” and “moto vs mota”. When I do practice this dialog with a Brazilian teacher, they have a lot of fun as well, when it comes to the culture difference like the meaning of “havaiana” in both countries.
Actually, I thought only Germans would be so crazy to put ananas on a pizza, in Italy you usually don’t get this as all, as far as I know. Glad to see that Portugues love it as well 🙂
When translating “There is a problem” PT-BR would most likely say “[esta situação] Tem um problema” (this situation has a problem) and PT-PT would say “Há um problema [nesta situação]” (there is a problem in this situation). In PT-PT we’d say “Tem um problema” when saying “(S)he has a problem”. Just a small difference!
I’m glad that many people enjoy this dialog! Márcio and I had a lot of fun making it! Maybe we could do it again in the future. 🙂
Pineapple on pizza is a very controversial issue all around the world!… except in Italy, I guess. It’s like a 50/50 thing. I personally hate pineapple on pizza! And I don’t understand why people would do that to a pizza! 😀
I just learnt from my Brazilian teacher what “gozar” in pt-br really means. 🙂 I guess you should place here a longer explication, as this is a very delicate subject, and nobody form PT better should use the world in BR without knowing this fact 🙂
Ananas in Italia never goes on Pizza, as same as “Toast-Hawai” which is a baked toast slices with pineapple and ham and cheese in Germany.
